ВИ-203 (VI-203) Tyres 1500×600-635 for MAZ-543 “Uragan” Heavy Truck

New and used tyres available – Limited stock!

The rubber that carried Soviet power across continents

Looking for tyres that can actually handle what you throw at them? These aren’t some dainty street tyres that’ll cry at the first sight of mud. These are VI-203s in size 1500×600-635 – the real deal that kept the legendary MAZ-543 “Uragan” (Hurricane) moving through conditions that would stop lesser vehicles dead in their tracks.

For those unfamiliar with this beast: the MAZ-543 is an 8×8 Soviet heavy artillery truck that made its debut in the Red Square parade back in 1965. Powered by a thundering 38.9-litre D12A-525 V12 diesel engine producing 525 horsepower, this monster was designed to carry Scud missiles, Smerch multiple rocket launchers, and just about every piece of heavy Soviet military hardware you can imagine. From the frozen wastelands of Siberia to the scorching deserts of Central Asia, from the forests of Eastern Europe to oil fields in the most remote corners of the USSR – the MAZ-543 went everywhere. And it did it on these tyres.

Why would you want these tyres?

Maybe you’re one of the lucky few who actually owns a MAZ-543. In that case, you already know how hard it is to find proper rubber for this beast. Or perhaps you’re restoring one and want period-correct equipment that’s not just authentic, but actually works. These tyres aren’t museum pieces – they’re meant to be used.

But here’s the thing – even if you don’t own a MAZ-543, these tyres have stories to tell. They’ve supported loads that would crush ordinary equipment. They’ve crossed terrain that would swallow lesser vehicles whole. And now they can be yours.

Features:

  • Size: 1500×600-635 (VI-203 specification)
  • Directional tread pattern for superior traction in all conditions
  • Self-cleaning design – mud, snow, sand won’t stick around
  • Excellent off-road capabilities – these tyres were designed for the worst conditions imaginable
  • Heavy-duty construction – built to carry loads up to 22 tonnes (that’s what the MAZ-543A was rated for)
  • Central tyre inflation compatible – works perfectly with the MAZ’s original CTIS system
  • Both new and used sets available – various conditions to suit different budgets and projects

Condition:

We have both new old stock (NOS) tyres that have never seen a vehicle, and used tyres in various conditions. All used tyres have been inspected and are serviceable – no dangerous cracks, no structural damage, ready to mount and roll.

The new tyres are exactly what they sound like – manufactured decades ago but never used. They’ve been properly stored and remain in excellent condition. These are increasingly rare pieces of kit.

Technical Specifications:

The VI-203 tyre in 1500×600-635 size was specifically designed for heavy 8×8 military trucks operating in extreme conditions. The directional tread pattern provides:

  • Superior grip on loose surfaces (sand, mud, snow)
  • Excellent water evacuation to prevent hydroplaning
  • Self-cleaning channels that prevent build-up
  • Reinforced sidewalls for puncture resistance
  • Load capacity suitable for vehicles weighing up to 25 tonnes fully loaded
  • They also fit the Polish Ł-34 loader made by Huta Stalowa Wola

These tyres work with the MAZ-543’s Central Tyre Inflation System, which allows the driver to adjust tyre pressure on the fly – drop it down for deep mud or sand, pump it back up for highway cruising. This feature turned the MAZ-543 from just another heavy truck into a true go-anywhere machine.

A bit about the MAZ-543

The MAZ-543 “Uragan” wasn’t just another military truck – it was a technological marvel of its time. Developed in the early 1960s at the Minsk Automobile Plant, this 8×8 monster was specifically designed to transport and launch ballistic missiles and rocket systems.

The truck featured:

  • Independent torsion bar suspension on all eight wheels
  • Automatic transmission with torque converter (pretty advanced for the era)
  • Two separate cabins (left and right) with excellent visibility
  • Central Tyre Inflation System for terrain adaptation
  • Maximum road speed of 60 km/h (not fast, but remember – this thing weighs 22 tonnes empty)
  • Range of about 650 km on internal tanks

The MAZ-543 served as the chassis for numerous weapons systems including the 9K52 Luna-M tactical missile system, the famous Scud-B ballistic missiles, and the devastating BM-30 Smerch multiple rocket launcher. It was also used in civilian applications – oil and gas exploration in Siberia, airport fire trucks (with 12,000-litre water tanks!), and heavy recovery operations.

Over 4,000 of these trucks were built, and they served in practically every army that operated Soviet equipment – from Warsaw Pact countries to India, China, Iraq, Syria, and dozens of others. Some are still in service today, more than 60 years after the first prototype rolled out.

And all of them rolled on tyres exactly like these.

These tyres don’t come around often. The MAZ-543 hasn’t been in production since 2000, and finding proper rubber for these beasts gets harder every year. If you need them, don’t wait – they won’t last long.
