But here’s the part nobody else selling these will tell you.

The thing Soviet leadership never bothered to fix

The GP-7 wasn’t an army mask. It was a civilian one — Grazhdanskiy Protivogaz, “civilian gas mask” — handed out by the millions to factory workers, civil-defence volunteers and ordinary people who were simply expected to seal one over their face when the sky fell.

There was just one problem. The original Soviet filters contain asbestos — a confirmed lab analysis put the figure at roughly 7.5% white asbestos. And asbestos doesn’t forgive. Once those microscopic fibres are inhaled, they lodge permanently in your lung tissue and stay there for life, where over the years they can cause serious, incurable disease — including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

So the Soviet state strapped an asbestos hazard to the faces of its own civilians and, for decades, the leadership never did a single thing about it. Nobody up the chain ever fixed it.

Every GP-7 we ship comes with a free modern NATO-standard filter — expired, but completely safe to handle. No asbestos. Nothing waiting in your display cabinet or your prop bag to quietly do you harm years down the line.

You still get the original filter too — but purely as a display piece, to keep the set complete and authentic-looking. It stays on the shelf, sealed, never on your face. The free NATO filter means you never have a reason to put the old one anywhere near your lungs. Best of both worlds: the genuine, complete look and your health intact.

We’re not aware of anyone else on the market doing this. Most sellers hand you the original, asbestos and all, and let you find out the hard way. We think that’s the wrong way to treat the people who keep this history alive.

Questions, answered

Is this mask safe? The mask itself is safe to handle and display. The hazard is only in the original filter, which contains asbestos — that’s exactly why we include a free modern NATO filter and tell you to keep the original sealed and never wear it.

Can I actually wear it / use the filter for protection? Wear it as a prop or for display, yes. But this is a vintage collector’s item — the included NATO filter is expired and not for genuine chemical, biological or dust protection. Don’t rely on it to actually filter anything.

What size do I need? Just one — it’s universal. The large rear harness adjusts to fit virtually any head, so there’s no sizing to figure out.

Is it really original? Yes — a genuine GP-7 in NOS / near-NOS condition from sealed Polish stocks. Not a reproduction. What you see in the photos is representative of the stock we ship.
