About the PTS-M Vehicle

The PTS-M was a Soviet tracked amphibious transport vehicle that served as the backbone of Warsaw Pact amphibious operations from the mid-1960s. Key characteristics include:

• Payload: 5 tons on land, 10 tons in water;
• Propulsion: Tracked on land, twin propellers in water;
• Loading: Rear ramp system for drive-on/drive-off capability;
• Crew: Two-man crew in forward cabin;
• Service: Used by Soviet Army and Warsaw Pact forces;

Historical Context

The PTS-M amphibious transport was introduced in 1965 to replace the earlier K-61. It was widely used by Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces and supplied to various nations including Poland, Eastern Germany, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Iraq, and Yugoslavia. The vehicle could carry up to 70 fully equipped troops or vehicles such as the Ural-375D truck, loaded via the rear ramp system.
