Last week, while visiting the Military Automotive Works in PoznaÅ„ (Wojskowe ZakÅ‚ady Mechaniczne), we stumbled upon something that made us stop dead in our tracks. Sitting quietly in a heated garage was what appeared to be a standard UAZ 469 pickup – but appearances, as we quickly learned, can be very deceiving.
This wasn’t just another restored UAZ. This was something far more interesting.I must admit that we have fallen in love with this vehicle, which is why we decided to introduce it to you. The workshop with a legendary past
Before we dive into the vehicle itself, it’s worth understanding where this masterpiece was born. The Military Automotive Works in PoznaÅ„ isn’t just any restoration shop – it’s a facility steeped in Cold War history. During the 1980s, these very workshops housed a second Polish production line for T-72 tanks, ready to be activated if the Cold War ever turned hot. The skilled hands that built this UAZ are the same ones that once maintained T-55s, T-72s, BMP-1s, and OT-64 SKOT armoured vehicles. Currently, these workshops maintain Leopard 2 and M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks belonging to the Polish Army, as well as K2 Black Panther tanks from South Korea.
Earlier they’ve been working on Volgas and, until the mid-2010s, military UAZs. When you’re dealing with people who understand the difference between hobby-level work and military-grade engineering, the results speak for themselves.
The story behind this beautiful UAZ 469 pickup
Built in 2014 as a prototype hunting vehicle, this UAZ represents what happens when you take Soviet engineering fundamentals and ask, “What if we could make this much better?” The team at the Military Automotive Works didn’t just restore this 1974 UAZ – they completely reimagined it.
Every single component was removed, rebuilt, and improved. But here’s where it gets interesting – instead of sticking with the original temperamental petrol engine, they made a decision that would make any UAZ enthusiast raise an eyebrow.

The Mercedes heart – and it’s more special than you think
Under the hood sits a Mercedes-Benz 250D diesel engine – the OM602l, to be precise. This naturally aspirated 2.5-litre unit produces 94 HP and 158 Nm of torque, transforming the driving experience completely. Gone are the days of wrestling with carburettors and dealing with the thirsty petrol appetite of the original motor.
But here’s the fascinating part – this isn’t just any Mercedes engine. This OM602 doesn’t come from a beaten mayonnaise, ex-Berlin W124 sedan taxi. It was sourced brand new from a local Mercedes-Benz dealer – this is still a pretty much new engine! If you know anything about these motors, you’ll understand the significance. This UAZ now shares its powertrain with one of the most reliable vehicles ever built. If it’s good enough for the W124, it’s certainly good enough for our UAZ.
The OM602 engine family has an almost mythical reputation for reliability. According to experts, it’s considered one of the most reliable engines ever produced, with some OM602-powered vehicles exceeding 1000,000 or even 1,500,000 kilometres. This success is comparable only to the famous OM617 engine that preceded it. When you’re planning to drive through Siberian wilderness or African bush, this kind of proven reliability matters.
The numbers don’t lie
Here’s something that will surprise you – the Mercedes OM602.912 diesel engine weighs almost exactly the same as the original UMZ 451 petrol engine it replaced. This means the vehicle’s weight distribution remains virtually unchanged, preserving the handling characteristics that made the UAZ 469 famous while dramatically improving performance and fuel economy.
The transmission received similar treatment – a fully synchronized five-speed Mercedes gearbox that makes gear changes smooth and predictable. Yet the builders were smart enough to keep the original UAZ transfer case and axles, maintaining the vehicle’s legendary off-road DNA while adding the refinement of German engineering.
Where function meets form
The custom two-door pickup body isn’t just for looks – it’s been designed specifically for practical use. Those massive BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 tires (31×10.50 R15) are serious off-road rubber that can handle anything from deep mud to rocky terrain.
What really caught our attention were the dual winches. The front-mounted Superwinch LP10,000 handles recovery duties, while the rear LT2000 ATV winch cleverly doubles as a crane system for loading heavy cargo. The rear frame, combined with the 900kg-capable winch, creates an ingenious crane system that can help with loading and unloading heavy equipment or game – perfect for the hunting application this prototype was designed for.
Safety and stopping power
One of the most significant upgrades is the conversion to front disc brakes. Anyone who’s driven an original UAZ knows that the drum brakes, while functional, leave much to be desired when it comes to stopping power. The disc brake conversion provides dramatically better stopping performance, shorter braking distances, and better heat dissipation – all crucial safety improvements, especially when carrying heavy loads or descending steep terrain.
The comfort revolution
Step inside, and you’ll immediately notice this isn’t your grandfather’s spartan military transport. The builders have transformed the interior into a genuinely comfortable space. Gone is the harsh, echoing cabin of the original – this UAZ features proper soundproofing that simply doesn’t exist in standard models.
The seats have been replaced with modern ones from a passenger car. They have been upholstered with new leather, and carpets replace the bare metal floor. There’s a proper radio with CD player and speakers mounted in the doors – simple touches that make long journeys far more pleasant. These might seem like small details, but anyone who’s spent hours in an original UAZ will appreciate the difference proper interior treatment makes.
Lighting the way
The lighting system has been completely modernized with LED units both front and rear. This isn’t just about looking contemporary – LED lights provide dramatically better illumination for night driving and off-road work, while consuming less power and lasting far longer than traditional bulbs. When you’re navigating challenging terrain in the dark, having proper lighting isn’t a luxury – it’s a safety essential.
The garage warrior problem
It’s worth noting that this professional approach stands in stark contrast to many amateur UAZ conversions we’ve encountered. Too often, enthusiasts with good intentions but limited skills create modifications that are genuinely dangerous. We’ve seen body lifts achieved by inserting layers of old transmission belt between the body and frame – turning what should be a capable vehicle into a potential death trap.
The difference between professional engineering and backyard experimentation is clear when you examine this build. Every modification has been properly engineered, safely executed, and aesthetically integrated. This is what happens when military-grade standards meet civilian comfort requirements.
Numbers that impress
Here’s what really amazed us – this UAZ has covered only 76 kilometres since its complete rebuild, with just 17 of those in recent years. It’s been stored in a heated garage and only driven for mandatory inspections. The result is a vehicle that looks and performs like it rolled out of the workshop yesterday.
The fuel consumption is remarkable too – around 12-15 litres per 100km in heavy terrain, compared to the 25+ litres you’d expect from a standard UAZ 469 with its original petrol engine. This dramatic improvement in fuel economy makes long-distance travel genuinely practical.
Modern benefits, classic soul
As a modernized 1974 vehicle, this UAZ qualifies for historic registration plates and can access clean transport zones – practical benefits for modern ownership. Yet it retains everything we love about these machines: simplicity, capability, and that indefinable character that makes UAZs special.
The reliability factor remains perhaps the most impressive aspect. Despite all the upgrades, this remains a vehicle you can maintain with basic tools. No complicated electronics, no temperamental systems – just honest, dependable engineering enhanced with proven components.
The engineering philosophy
What makes this build special isn’t just the quality of individual components, but the thoughtful integration of improvements. The builders understood that the UAZ’s fundamental design was sound – it just needed refinement in key areas. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, they identified the weak points (engine reliability, transmission smoothness, braking performance, comfort) and addressed each with proven solutions.
The result is a vehicle that drives like a modern machine while retaining the robust simplicity that made UAZs legendary. It’s the automotive equivalent of a perfectly restored vintage watch fitted with a modern, reliable movement.
The million Euro question
We’ve described this remarkable machine, but now comes the interesting part. This prototype represents hundreds of hours of skilled work by military-trained technicians, premium components including a legendary Mercedes engine and transmission, complete custom bodywork, and engineering expertise that comes from decades of working on military vehicles.
It’s essentially a brand-new vehicle built using proven technology and wrapped in classic Soviet sheet metal. The Mercedes engine alone, when sourced from a G-Wagon, commands premium prices. Add the custom fabrication, professional paint, interior work, brake upgrades, winch systems, and hundreds of hours of skilled labor.
